Why Do Some Black Polished Pebbles Fade?
Black polished pebbles can look deep black and glossy when they are new. But after outdoor exposure, the colour can gradually look lighter or less intense as the surface finish changes.
The reason is not only the stone itself. The raw material, polishing time, wax, finishing method and outdoor exposure can all influence how the colour holds over time.
It All Starts with the Raw Stone
Polishing starts with the black pebble raw material, which varies in shape and surface quality. Some stones are naturally darker, while others may look slightly lighter before polishing.
Black pebbles may have rounded and thick, flatter, elongated or slightly irregular shapes. After polishing, these differences are still visible. It is important to know what kind of shape you want, as different shapes are priced differently depending on the availability of raw material for each type.

Why Wax Changes the Appearance
Most polished black pebbles are mechanically tumbled and then finished with wax or another surface treatment to deepen the colour and create a glossy appearance.
Water Wax, High-Temperature Wax and Different Finishes
Different processors may use traditional wax, high-temperature wax or water-wax systems depending on the required finish. Water-wax processing can create a bright finish while reducing processing time in some methods. Other finishing systems may involve longer processing.
The main point is that not every shiny black pebble has been produced in the same way.
Does Polishing Time Matter?
Yes. Longer tumbling and polishing can produce a smoother, brighter surface, but it also means more machine time, electricity and cost.
Normal polishing generally takes around 8 hours, while some faster water-wax processes use shorter cycles. Higher-polished black pebbles can require considerably longer processing, sometimes around 24–30 hours depending on the stone and method. These are general examples rather than fixed industry standards.
Why Does the Colour Fade?
Sunlight, rain, water and general weathering can gradually reduce the intensity of the surface finish. As this happens, the pebble may look less glossy, slightly lighter and closer to its natural appearance.
A new sample therefore does not tell an importer everything. The important question is whether the finish and overall quality remain consistent across bulk production.
Quality control can include removing broken pieces, size screening, colour sorting and final inspection. Natural stone will always vary, but commercial orders still need reasonable consistency.
