Quartz is a natural mineral, so the raw material is not always uniform. Different deposits can produce bright white, off-white, grey or slightly yellow quartz, with differences in quality and appearance.

Selecting suitable raw material is therefore important before processing begins. The quartz can then be crushed and separated into specific particle sizes according to its final application.

For large orders, consistency becomes particularly important. Producing a small sample is relatively easy; maintaining the same colour, grading and overall quality across thousands of tonnes is a much greater challenge.

What Is White Quartz Used For?

One of the most interesting things about quartz is the number of applications that can come from the same raw mineral.

Coarser white quartz aggregate can be used for exposed aggregate concrete, driveways, pathways, pool surrounds, courtyards and landscaping. Different sizes can be produced depending on the required finish and application.

Quartz is also used as filter media for water treatment, where controlled particle size and cleanliness are important.

When processed into finer material, quartz sand has applications in glass manufacturing, photovoltaic glass, ceramics, tiles and sanitary ware. Further grinding can produce fine quartz powder for more specialised industrial applications.

The SiO₂ level and overall chemical composition of quartz can also play an important role in determining its suitability for different applications. Different industries have different specifications, so the required quartz grade depends on its intended use.

How Is White Quartz Processed?

The processing method depends on the raw material and its final use. A typical process can include:

Additional processing may also be used when required, such as acid washing to reduce certain impurities.

This flexibility is important because an importer purchasing quartz for landscaping has very different requirements from an importer purchasing it for concrete, filtration, glass or industrial manufacturing.

China has significant quartz-processing capacity. Production facilities can process hundreds of tonnes per day, allowing large commercial orders to be supplied.

For projects requiring thousands of tonnes, maximum production capacity is not the only consideration. Maintaining the required specification throughout production becomes equally important.

Producing a good sample is one thing. Maintaining the same colour, particle size and quality across thousands of tonnes is another. For large-volume production, consistency and quality control are therefore just as important as capacity.

Logistics Matter

Quartz is heavy, so transportation can represent a significant part of the final delivered price. The lowest material price does not always mean the lowest overall cost.
